After School Activities

Carden Academy offers a wide variety of optional after-school enrichment classes and activities. The cost and grade level availability varies for each activity. All classes take place on site at school.

Art Enrichment

I Love Art with Mrs. Seth - our resident Art teacher expands the curriculum through a rotating month-long series of weekly sessions focusing on a variety of mediums including watercolor, oil painting, and mixed media. Students have the ability to share their artwork through Artsonia.com, as well as at the annual Carden Art Show.

Basketball

After School Hoops by One on One Basketball - this class is a weekday afternoon basketball program for aspiring young players. The one hour instructional sessions combine fundamental skills instruction with organized team competition. Developing players benefit by improving their individual skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, rebounding, and defending while, at the same time, learning how to work within the framework of a team. Boys and girls of all skill levels are encouraged to join.

Chess

Carden Chess by Success Chess School - The first half of this class is chess study through instructor-led demonstrations and activities, while the second half focuses on tournament play. Sucess Chess School was founded by Alan M. Kirshner, Ph.D., awarded Chess Coach of the Year in 2000 by the Chess Education Association. SCS trains their instructors to work with young children and guide learning and play through reward and positive reinforcement.

Chorus

Carden Chorus with Mrs. Huey-Booker - our resident Music teacher leads the school chorus through numerous musical genres including gospel, show tunes, and contemporary. With over 15 years experience of teaching music to children, Mrs. Huey-Booker shares her love of music education and extensive songwriting and arranging skills with our students. In Chorus, students learn vocal instruction, breathing techniques, and overall performing arts training. The Chorus performs throughout the year at several Carden events including school assemblies, and Christmas in the Park.

Dance

Tap, Ballet, and Tumbling by The Dance Affair - with over 20 years as a well-established dance school in San Jose, The Dance Affair brings one of their combo classes to Carden, offering a class that is technical, exciting, and fun! Each 40 minute class is segmented into the three disciplines to allow the young dancer’s experience to expand.

Drama

Actors Express with Miss Sutton - our most seasoned Kindergarten teacher shares her vast drama experience and passion for theater in this fall semester class. Students build confidence and critical communication and interpersonal skills while learning a short play that will be performed for the school at the end of the session. Come experience the magic of theater!

Gymnastics

Gymnastics by Apex Gymnastics of Almaden - located on the Carden Academy Almaden campus, Apex Gymnastics is a fully equipped gymnastics school designed for children from 12 months through high school, offering toddler, pre-school, recreational, and pre-teen development programs.  Encouragement and fun are combined with professional training to ensure that all students achieve their very best in a positive learning environment.

Jewelry

Jewelry Designers with Mrs. Spycher - introduce your child to the art of jewelry making! Students are encouraged to explore their creativity and are introduced to interesting color and texture while improving hand-eye coordination, small muscle development, and pattern making skills in a relaxed, joyful, age-appropriate environment. Materials are provided.

Language Enrichment

French with Madame Hoop
- one of our resident Language Arts teachers expands the curriculum by broadening the basics with fun games and engaging language exercises.

Hindi by Jano Hindi - sponsored by the US Hindi Association, this class provides a fun, creative, and highly interactive environment focused on developing, speaking, writing, and understanding skills. The class is broken up into segments to offer learning at the student’s own pace.


Music Enrichment

Piano and Vocal Private Lessons - our resident Music teacher shares her love of music education by offering individual private instruction on campus.

Guitar with Mr. Grimes - our resident fourth grade teacher shares his expansive guitar experience by teaching students of all ages and levels the fundamentals of playing rhythm guitar.  Instruction includes reading music, chord formation, and strumming along to easy songs.  Students must bring their own guitar.  Private in-home lessons are also available.

Public Speaking

Welcome to Public Speaking by Brier Buchalter - develop confidence, overcome fear, and enhance vocabulary and speaking skills in this class that covers preparatory skills and successful delivery.  Brier Buchalter’s extra-curricular public speaking courses have been implemented at over 20 schools in California based on his head coaching experience with the 5th ranked Speech & Debate team in the state.  Students meet weekly during lunch hour.

Science Enrichment

Destination Science with Miss Wells - this national program comes to Carden via our resident 5th Grade teacher, who guides the science leaders of tomorrow through a series of hands-on classes that incorporate creative problem-solving challenges. Students can become a science superhero, build robots, or design a battery-powered machine that they can take home at the end of the session. Materials are provided.

Scouting

Girl Scouts - led by parent volunteers Shoba Krishnan, Twila Guthrie, and Erin Guthrie, Girl Scouts promotes progressive and cooperative learning experiences, life-affirming decisions, and responsible citizenship. Troops participate in various opportunities that encourage students to discover their talents and abilities in a supportive and safe environment.

Daisy Scouts - led by parent volunteer Kim Hui, Daisy Scouts introduces the positive concepts of Girl Scouts to Kindergarten and Grade 1 participants.

Soccer

Soccer by Kidz Love Soccer - this class helps youngsters develop a lifelong love of soccer while they begin learning to play on a team. Students learn to master the fundamentals including dribbling, passing, and shooting, while experiencing teamwork and good sportsmanship. Instructors keep the atmosphere fun, friendly, and non-competitive.

Speech & Debate

Speech & Debate Team - lead by Brier Buchalter, head coach of the 5th ranked Speech & Debate team in California, students have the opportunity to join a stimulating academic competition and learn powerful language tools to help with high school and university admittance, job interviews, and life-long presentation skills.  The Carden team competes at local universities concurrent with weekly sessions on campus.

Tae Kwon Do

Fong Family Martial Arts
- Founded by Master Fong who has over 40 years of martial arts experience and advanced black belt degrees, Fong Family Martial Arts provides training for the disciplines of Korean Tae Kwon Do, Chinese Kung Fu, Korean Hapkido, and Philippine Escrima. At Carden, Tae Kwon Do is the featured discipline and is taught by our very own administrators Mr. Woo and Assistant Master Roussere, who combined have over 30 years of martial arts training between them. Students and parents are all welcome to enroll! Classes are available for Carden SC students and Carden Almaden students.

Tutoring

On Campus Private Tutoring - one on one tutoring is available on campus for students of all grade levels across the subjects.  Private sessions can be scheduled after school with our resident tutor, Mrs. Shah.  Tutoring fees are $65 per hour and can be in quarter-hour increments, depending on the assistance level needed for your student.  Please contact her directly by emailing hshah@cardensv.com.

Writing

Writers’ Workshop
- Laura Huff taught Carden Language Arts for 12 years and developed her three-month after-school writing program that provides the perfect chance to enrich the writing opportunities for the enthusiastic writer, or, give the reluctant writer a chance to gain confidence and get extra help. The class provides leadership development and one-on-one help with mixed ages and small groups.
