Art:

With the basic knowledge of the 5 elements of shape, first graders are ready for duplication, matching, and mirror image exercises. First graders are now learning to use tools more effectively and efficiently. Now that they have a grasp on shapes and color, projects become more complex and analytical. By using different papers, paints, pencils, markers, oil pastels and crayons the first graders are learning techniques that will help them “see” better and gain better focus.

Music:

Early Music Awareness – singing, movement, rhythm, solfeggio (do, re, mi), instruments, theory

French:

Classes are held every day for 20 minutes.
Each student has a picture book, French for Elementary Schools.
Directions are given in French and demonstrated.
Each page adds new vocabulary and reviews words from Kindergarten.
Students learn to repeat simple sentences and most learning is oral.
Children now count up to 30.
Sounds; diphthongs

Physical Education:

Improving Locomotor Skills: Students will refine and improve the following skills: running, skipping, hopping, sliding, jumping, galloping, and leaping.

Improving Manipulative Skills: Here students will refine and improve the following movement patterns: kicking, punting, dribbling with the feet (soccer dribble), overhand throwing, catching, and dribbling with hands (basketball dribble), and striking with a hockey stick.
Demonstrate full range of motion in leg swings and stretches, basic locomotor skills, and good posture.
Practice safe use of playground equipment. They will also participate in physical activities and demonstrate good sportsmanship.

Computer:

Learn to open and close programs without assistance.
Continue to learn to locate and use letters and numbers on the keyboard as well as capitals and special characters.
Begin to learn touch-typing with a program called Read, Write and Type.
Learn how to enter and delete text in Microsoft Word. They will continue to develop skill in using the mouse..
Write short 2-3 sentence paragraphs in Microsoft Word using correct punctuation.
Create original artwork on the computer using Kid Pix.

Visiting the Web site www.cybersmart.com, children will:
Go on a virtual field trip and learn that they should always take an adult with them when traveling in cyberspace.
Discuss the purpose of advertisements and practice differentiating ads from content on Web sites.
