Frequently Asked Questions

When does school open?

The first day of school is Wednesday August 31, 2011. It is a full day.

What time does school start and dismiss?

Santa Clara campus:

Grades 4 - 8 8:10am to 2:40pm
Preschool - Grade 3 8:30am to 3:00pm

Almaden campus: 8:30am to 3:00pm

It is important to have your children at school on time, as it minimizes disruption to both the classroom and the child. Students not picked up by 3:15pm are directed to Extended Supervision.

Is there Extended Supervision?

Yes. There is Extended Supervision (E.S.) even on the first day of school. It is on site at the campus, supervised by the Carden E.S. staff.

7:15am - 7:45am: A.M. E.S., $2.75 per day per child
7:45am - 8:30am: Playground supervision, no charge
3:15pm - 6:00pm: P.M. E.S., $8.00 per day per child
12:00pm - 6:00pm: Noon dismissal days, $8.00 per child for 3pm pickup, $16.00 per child after 3pm.

There is also E.S. available on conference days. Please refer to the Extended Supervision guidelines on our website for further details.

What are Conference Days?

Conference Days are when parents have the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher and discuss successes and challenges from the past semester. There is no school on Conference Days, but E.S. is available. For Preschool through Grade 5, all parents must set up conference appointments through the school office. For Grades 6 - 8, the office will contact parents to set up appointments per teacher request. Please note, Carden Academy believes strongly in an open door communication policy; parents should feel free at any time to schedule appointments with the office or teaching staff to discuss school-related issues or ideas.

What is the illness policy?

A child who is running a fever, is unusually tired, or shows even mild symptoms of a cold or other disease should be kept at home. Please notify the school office by 9:00am if the child will be absent. Communicable diseases are required to be reported to the school administration for the health and safety of our entire student and faculty population.

Is there a hot lunch program?

Yes. The hot lunch program at Carden Academy is provided by Choice Lunch, a leading hot lunch provider for a number of schools in the Bay Area. www.choicelunch.com is your online tool where you can conveniently select lunches from a wide daily selection of delicious meals, both hot and cold. You may also manage many aspects of your lunch service experience, such as making changes to an existing order, view or change details of your account, browse through nutrition news and resources, and much more. Registration through the website is required to utilize this service. Our school code is: Carden.

What happens if my child forgets their lunch?

A limited number of extra hot lunches will be available for purchase. Families will be billed by Choice Lunch. The children are not allowed to use the phone for forgotten items.

What should be brought to the first day of school?

  • Lunch (if not pre-ordered), a snack, and a beverage. Milk is available for pre-order through www.choicelunch.com.
  • Sweatshirt or jacket. Your child should already be dressed in full uniform each day. Please clearly label all your child’s clothing, lunch boxes, school bags, and other personal items. All Carden uniform clothing, including sweaters and jackets, look alike!
  • Additional school supplies for your child’s grade level as detailed in our School Supply notification.
We recommend the following items be brought to the Welcome Back Meet & Greet BBQ and dropped off in the Multi-Purpose Room, or, dropped off in the office during the summer.

Who will be my child’s teacher?

The class lists will be available starting on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 4:00pm, in time for our Welcome Back Meet & Greet BBQ.

When is the first tuition payment due?

The first payment of the annual tuition’s eleven installments is due July 1. A late fee will be applied if your account is ten days past due. FACTS Management is Carden Academy’s tuition processing service provider.

How does my student sign up for After School activities?

Information about our after school classes will be posted on our website as programs become available. Fliers will also be available in the office and sent home throughout the school year.

When do school notices go home?

General school notices will be posted on our web-based parent/student information system. This is our primary communication source between the school and Carden families. Some notices will be sent home with the student on Thursdays in their Thursday envelope folders.

Why are French and Mandarin taught at Carden?

One of the key goals of the Carden Method is to teach children how to communicate their ideas fluently and accurately, both orally and in writing.  Learning another language enhances children's linguistic abilities.  We also recognize that we live in a global community, and it is important for students to understand different cultures and way of thinking.  Teaching a foreign language provides a broader perspective of the world.  That is why we teach the two most commonly spoken languages in the world - French (at the Santa Clara campus) and Mandarin (at the Almaden campus).

When can I enroll my child at Carden Academy?

It is never too late to begin a child’s education at Carden. The Carden Method strives for the success of every child at any age. Therefore, all children can benefit from the curriculum, at any grade level. If there is space available, we will accept students at any time of the school year.

What are Special Days / Carden Cardinal Days?

Special Days are when students may dress in theme-related attire rather than the usual school uniform. Some Special Day themes include College Day, Tropical Day, Hat Day, and holidays such as Halloween and Valentine’s Day. The specific dates are marked on the school calendar. Please refer to the Special Days notice on the website for more details.
Carden Cardinal Day occurs every Friday. Students and faculty may wear their Carden Cardinal T-shirts and sweatshirts to school rather than the usual school uniform.
